Proof of Graduation:

Fill out section 1 of Form 2 - Certificate of Professional Education, then send it to your AVMA accredited veterinary school to be completed. This form must be submitted with an official transcript by the university to the New York State Education Department.

Exam Requirements:

NAVLE: New vets applying for a license in New York will need to pass the NAVLE exam and have their results submitted directly to the New York Board.

New York does not require a jurisprudence exam for licensure at this time.

Reciprocity Applicants

Veterinarians who are already licensed in another state follow the same procedure as unlicensed applicants. 

Licensed vets who have completed the NBE but not the CCT can complete Section 2 of Form 4 - Verification of Professional Practice to be licensed by endorsement.

Continuing Education Requirements
45 Hours of CE are required every 3-year renewal period.

NOTE: You are exempt from CE requirements for your first triennial registration period.

What forms of CE qualify in New York?

  • At least 2 hours of CE are required on the use, misuse, documentation, safeguarding, and prescribing of controlled substances.
  • Up to 22.5 of CE hours can be acquired from self-study. 

Continuing Education Verification & Documentation

New York does not verify your CE annually, but it is recommended you keep a record of your CE for at least 6 years as the New York Board of Veterinary Medicine may randomly audit you.

How do I update my personal info (name/address)?

To change your address during the renewal period, do so by using the Online Renewal Portal

To change your address outside of the renewal period, submit the change through Chat or using the Address Change Form.

To change your name, complete this form and submit supporting documentation.

Temporary License for Relief Work

Unfortunately, New York does not offer temporary veterinary licenses that allow relief veterinarians to practice in-state for a limited duration.
