Frequently Asked Questions
What will I get paid for Roo Uni Externships?
What you get paid is entirely between you and the hospital, and Roo does not take a percentage or collect any fees. Once you apply for an externship, the hospital will reach out to negotiate any pay or stipends. You’ll also be able to see any stipends available in the externship posting.
What are the eligibility requirements to qualify for a Roo University externship?
To request a Roo Uni Externship, you must be a first through fourth year Veterinarian Student currently enrolled at an AVMA accredited veterinary school. A current resume is also required to share with our hospital partners.
Recent graduates who are not yet licensed and otherwise unable to practice are welcome to apply for Roo Uni Externships as well.
Does Roo Uni offer externships to Vet Techs or pre-vet students?
Unfortunately, Roo only offers externships to Veterinarian Students at this time.
What types of practices can I extern at?
We encourage you to use these short externship experiences to try new things and find your passion. Roo hosts a variety of unique learning experiences for Students to explore everything the field of veterinary medicine has to offer. Choose from general practice, emergency, urgent care, surgery, dentistry, exotics, physical therapy/acupuncture, and more.
Where can I travel to?
Roo currently offers externships at clinics in 47 states, and we're constantly expanding! This is your opportunity to learn new skills and broaden your horizons. If you’re looking for something convenient, check for externships near your school, your home, or wherever you’ll be spending time during your breaks.
We also recommend using this experience to travel to new cities and new practices that excite you. These early years when you're not bound to any state by a license may be your best opportunity to travel and experience veterinary medicine across the country.
How long do externships last?
On average, veterinary externships last one to two weeks but can extend to a maximum of six weeks. As the Student, it's up to you to determine how long you'd like your externship to last. Hospitals can recommend a specific duration, but ultimately, it will have to fit your schedule.
Do I need liability insurance for Roo Uni Externships?
We strongly recommend all Students carry their own liability insurance. Luckily, the AVMA has a complimentary, easy-to-access insurance policy for Students. We also recommend consulting with your university or faculty to find out what policies are available through your school.
Can Roo help me find employment when I graduate?
Absolutely! Roo was first created as a relief staffing platform to help Veterinarians find jobs at hospitals in their area. We recommend new grads have at least six months of strong clinical experience before venturing out into the world of relief. Working as a Relief Veterinarian is a great way to begin your veterinary career as it allows you to create your own schedule and try out a wide variety of clinics and shift types to see what you enjoy best.
Roo is also a great way to find part or full-time jobs, and Roo Relief Veterinarians are often hired by the hospitals they support. The experiences you have and connections you make working at different hospitals will help you find the clinic that's a perfect fit for you. As a bonus, you may even earn more working relief shifts than you can full-time. Our app does not differentiate pay based on experience.
