October 14 is Pet Obesity Awareness Day

Social media has its advantages – connecting people in an age of seeming disconnect. However one thing it HASN’T been good for is pets’ waistlines. The popularity of “chonky” pets online has been soaring, much to the annoyance of veterinary professionals everywhere. For the uninitiated, chonky is just a meme-ified version of chunky, and it’s used to describe portly pets.

Now more than ever, it’s vital to have serious conversations about the poor welfare of overweight animals. The AVMA has put together a wonderful resource for veterinary professionals, including a Pet Obesity Toolkit. Have the conversation about diet and feeding schedule, even before a pet starts to… *ahem* fill out.
